The Manipur Government is framing an anti-drug policy to create a drug-free State, Social Welfare Minister Nemcha Kipgen said.

“The first draft of the Manipur drug policy is nearing completion in consultation with various stakeholders,” she said while addressing the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking programme yesterday.

The Department of Social Welfare has opened 20 integrated rehabilitation centres for treatment of needy people, she stated. Many addicted persons have been reformed with help from these centres, the minister added.

The function was also attended by Agriculture Minister V Hangkhanlian, Education Minister Th Radheshyam Singh, Principal Secretary (Social Welfare) V Vumlunmang and others.

In his speech, Hangkhanlian said drug abuse is rampant among youngsters, with the issue being critical in Churachandpur district.

Education Minister Radheshyam stressed the importance of taking proper care of drug addicts.

Certificates, prizes and cash awards were also distributed to winners of district and State-level painting competitions held on June 20.

A student of New Era Higher Secondary School in Thoubal district was awarded for writing the best slogan against drug abuse.
