NET Bureau, Kingson Chingakham

The 105th edition of the Indian Science Congress will be hosted by Manipur University in Imphal in March, 2018. The annual event has been postponed for the first time in its over centenary history. The Vice Chancellor of Osmania University in Hyderabad informed the association that the university was no longer in a position to host the event which was scheduled from January 3 to 7. The event was also on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s calendar in January.

The most certain reason for Osmania University’s inability to organize the event is because of the ongoing student protests in the campus. Security officials expected a high level of protests during the event against the Prime Minister over the issues of minorities and dalits and the anger of the youths against the Chief Minister of Telangana K Chandrasekhar Rao’s incapacity to recruit in the government services.

The venue was changed on Wednesday, December 27 in an emergency executive meeting of the Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA). Professor Gangadhar, General Secretary (Membership Affairs) of the ISCA said, “As per the decision of the Emergency Executive Committee meeting held on December 27, 2017, the 105th Indian Science Congress will be held in Manipur University, Imphal, in March 2018. The dates will be informed soon”. This is the second time that the event is taking place in the north-east region. In 2009, Shillong was selected for its annual event.

Members interested to participate in the 105th Indian Science Congress have to make a fresh registration. The Registration and Accommodation Fees submitted to the Osmania University, Hyderabad will be refunded by the Osmania University directly to concerned person.

The dates will be finalized according to the availability of the Prime Minister. Professor Gangadhar further said, “It will be organised between March 15 and 25. The final dates will be announced within a week. It is likely that the Science Congress would commence on March 17 or March 18”.

Six institutions across the country expressed interest of hosting the event viz. Andhra University in Visakhapatnam, Lovely Professional University in Jalandhar, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University in Bareilly and the SAGE University in Indore.

Among these institutions Manipur University was the only university whose claim was backed by a letter of support from the Chief Minister and the Governor. And the executive meeting found Manipur University the most appropriate as it goes well with the theme of the upcoming event- ‘Reaching the Unreached’. Professor Gangadhar said, “In the case of Manipur University, both the Chief Minister and the governor sent letters saying the state and the university would be very happy to organise the event and all infrastructural and logistical arrangements would be made on time. The vice-chancellor sent a detailed invitation proposing to host the Science Congress”.

A team of the association is expected to visit Manipur University on December 29 and 30 to assess its preparedness
