MDA to form the Executive Committee in the KHADC

NET Bureau

It is now clear that the constituents of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) are all set to form the Executive Committee (EC) in the Khasi Hill Autonomous District Council (KHADC).

The results of the KHADC polls which were declared on March 2 gave a fractured mandate with the Congress (10 members) of District Council (MDC) emerging as the single largest party. But now with the emerging equation, it may have to sit in the Opposition.

On the other hand, the National People’s Party (NPP) has won seven seats; the United Democratic Party (UDP) got six; the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) won two; the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) bagged one seat while Independents won three seats.

On Saturday evening, one of the independent MDCs, Teiborlang Pathaw who won from Mawlai joined the UDP, therefore equaling its tally with the NPP.
It may be pointed out here that there is no anti-defection law in the autonomous district council.

With the UDP and the NPP now at seven seats each in the KHADC, the UDP will now have the bargaining power to canvass for the post of Chief Executive Member (CEM) to be allotted to the party. On Saturday, the NPP and the UDP reached an understanding that the NPP with 12 seats in Jaintia Hill Autonomous District Council (JHADC) will get the post of CEM. The posts of the deputy CEM and the chairman will be from the UDP while the deputy chairman will be from the NPP.
