Altogether 181 houses have been damaged by Cyclone Fani that lashed the State last Saturday evening and has affected over 700 people across the State.

Disaster Management Minister (in-charge) Kyrmen Shylla said officials are still assessing the extent of the damage caused by the cyclone and the exact figures would be available in a couple of days.

The maximum number of houses damaged by the cyclone was in West Garo Hills district (63 houses) followed by East Garo Hills and East Jaintia Hills district.

“All the affected people are being provided relief in the form of food, tents and other materials by the respective district administration,” said Shylla.

He said an amount of Rs 20 lakh has been made available with the DCs so that they can help the affected people until the team assessing the damage can give in figures the amount required for rebuilding.

“There were no loss of lives and there was only one case of injury and the person would be provided compensation as per norms,” informed Shylla. The Minster informed that after the final assessment report comes in he would be holding a meeting for further course of action. “After the assessment, we would request for funds from the Centre or else we would manage with the funds available in the State,” he stated.
