Mizoram University Students Launch Indefinite Strike Demanding Regular VC

With the Central government failing to appoint a regular Vice Chancellor (VC) to Mizoram University despite repeated appeals made by both students and teachers alike, students of the varsity on Wednesday launched indefinite strike under the aegis of Mizoram University Students’ Council (MZUSC) by boycotting all academic and non-academic activities.

Mizoram University is a central university under the University Grants Commission (UGC), and was established on July 2, 2001, by the Mizoram University Act (2000) of the Parliament of India. The university has been without regular Vice Chancellor since May last year.

Disappointed with the apathy shown to them, hundreds of students today assembled at the university gate and held demonstration demanding immediate appointment of regular VC. Apart from boycotting classes, the agitating students prevented teachers and non-teaching staff from attaining office.

On August 28, the MZUSC had submitted representation to Union Minister for Human Resource Development Prakash Javadekar imploring him to look into the problem of students and immediately appoint new regular VC. The students’ council had also warned that it would stage an agitation if its demand is not met before September 5.

“It is unfortunate that the central government shows apathy towards Mizoram despite repeated appeals being made for immediate appointment of a regular VC. The laxity of the central government is an insult to the student of MZU. Left with no other option, we have launched an agitation with a hope to draw the attention of the central government to immediately appoint a regular VC as the government did not give positive response to our demand before the deadline set by the council,” MZUSC president Lalnunhlima said, adding that the university shall remain closed for indefinite period or till their demand is met.

Speaking at the protest site, MZUSC vice president Malsawmsanga also blamed the central government saying it ‘shows apathy’ to the students demand. “Has the central government forgotten that there is a central university in Mizoram?” he questioned. The student leaders also said that the absence of a regular VC is a big embarrassment for Mizoram as a whole. “The central government should pay due attention to our cry if it consider Mizoram as part of India,” he added.

The students’ body said that that the absence of a regular VC for a long time has not only severely affected all employees and students, but also adversely affected the overall academic functions. It alleged that the central government failed to appoint a regular VC despite interaction or interview for short-listed candidate being held more than three months ago.

Meanwhile, the students’ council in a statement appealed to the people to give full support in its fight for immediate appointment of regular VC.
