Over 200 teachers and students of Mizoram University (MZU) on Wednesday staged a peaceful demonstration to express solidarity to students and teachers of Jawaharlal Nehru (JNU), who have been brutality assaulted by a masked group of people earlier this month.

The demonstration held at the varsity campus in Tanhril on the outskirt of Aizawl was organised jointly by Mizoram University Teachers’ Association (MIZUTA), Mizoram University Non- Teaching Employees’ Association (MUNTSA) and Mizoram University Students’ Council (MZUSC).

MIZUTA president Lalnilawma said that the protest was just a peaceful demonstration to extend solidarity to students and teachers of JNU, who have been brutally assaulted by masked people. He also said that the organisations strongly condemned the atrocities and violence meted out to the students and teachers of JNU.

Meanwhile, a joint statement issued by the three organisations, strongly condemned the violence at JNU campus on January 5 and asked the government book the culprits at the earliest. The statement also urged the concerned authorities to ensure all time safety in universities and places of higher learning all over the country. The joint statement also urged all concerned citizens to refrain from unleashing violence at universities and institutes of higher learning.
