The new traffic rules to ration road and ease traffic snarls will come into effect from July 8 after the Gauhati High Court lifted stay order.

The new rules restricting the movement of vehicles to ease traffic jams in the state capital Aizawl was supposed to become effective from June 1.

A notification issued by Rodingliana Chawngthu, Superintendent of Police (Traffic) said that the new traffic rules will be enforced for four weeks as an experiment from July 8.

The new rules will cover all private and commercial vehicles except those exempted, he added. It will also cover all vehicles coming from other district and non-state registered vehicles.

The new rules, however, will not cover important officials like Governor, Chief Minister, and assembly speaker.

In an effort to ease the increasing traffic snarl in Aizawl, the meeting of state Coordination Committee on Traffic Management held on April 25, had decided to introduce new traffic rules in Aizawl from June 1 to replace the existing rules introduced by the erstwhile Congress government in 2017.

The new rules were put on hold by the Aizawl bench of Gauhati High Court following an appeal by the Mizoram Bar Association, an umbrella organization of all advocates in the state on May 30.
