Mizoram’s apex student body, the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) has strongly opposed the construction of a mosque in a plot of land given by a woman in central Serchhip town in Mizoram.

A statement issued by MZP headquarters of Serchhip slammed one Rothuami for “selling” her land for construction of mosque claiming it was “illegal as non-tribals are not legally allowed to own a land in tribal areas”.

“Though the Constitution of India guaranteed religious freedom to every community allowing them to construct their religious monuments in any part of the country, the Muslim community can’t permanently own a land for construction of mosques as non-tribals are not legally allowed to buy land in tribal areas,” the statement of the Mizo student body said.

The student body censured the sale of land for construction of mosque arguing that it was a “violation” of rights enshrined in the Constitution for protection of the tribal people. The MZP further stated that it would make “massive effort” to ensure that no non-tribal people own land permanently in Mizoram.
