Nagaland Governor PB Acharya has appealed to the state government to immediately complete the formalities for enactment of the Lokayukta Bill in the state.

Acharya, in a press statement on Wednesday said that in view of the recent scams in the state, the government must be reminded that the citizens are becoming more and more agitated after getting to know of scams like adulteration of petrol, pension fund scam, educational scholarship scam etc. He stated that with these scams widely reported in the local media, it has become absolutely necessary for Nagaland to have a Lokayukta.

The governor said that in order to redress the grievances of the citizens, the Administrative Reforms Commission, appointed by the Central Government in 1966, recommended the constitution of the institutions of Lokayukta. In the light of those recommendations institutions of Lokayukta were established in various states of the country with jurisdiction to deal with complaints not only against elective public servants, but also against other categories of public servants defined in the Act. The stated that the Lokayukta is important as it a constitutional counter-check to corruption and non-performance.
