There will be no change in leadership for the moment in the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) and the State Congress Legislature Party (CLP).

This was stated by All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in-charge for Assam Harish Rawat here on Thursday.
“There is no question of change at present. All of us (in the Congress party) now are in fact working to change the Sonowal government. All in the party are working unitedly. There may be some grievances. There may be some questions. But those will be addressed within the family,” Rawat said.

He added the priority for the Congress party now is to ensure the defeat of the BJP-led alliance in the 2021 Legislative Assembly polls.

Rawat said that he has met Congress legislators to discuss issues like NRC and CAB and on ways to carry out the ongoing agitation programme against the Centre’s economic policies.

It is noteworthy that the principal opposition party has witnessed factional fighting in recent days and a section of Congress leaders in the State have demanded removal of APPC president Ripun Bora and CLP leader Debabrata Saikia.

Meanwhile, sources said that APCC vice president and Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi and Congress party’s chief whip in the Legislative Assembly Wazed Ali Choudhury, told Rawat that the current state of uncertainty is not good for the party.

The duo suggested that the party high command take a decision on the leadership issue at the earliest.

Sources said that Bordoloi and Choudhury spoke with Rawat at the Rajiv Bhavan on Wednesday.

Bordoloi reportedly complained that the AICC is “notorious for indecisiveness” and added that if the leadership change is carried out in the eleventh hour then it will be difficult for the party to properly formulate its plans and strategies in the 2021 Assembly polls, as per the sources.
