NET Bureau

A young woman commuter on a two-wheeler was badly injured on Monday in Coimbatore when she tried to dodge a leaning AIADMK flag pole, fell on the road, and her legs were run over by a truck.

A series of flag poles had been erected at the spot for the wedding of an AIADMK functionary, Swami Bomivardhan.

Rajeshwari, 31, was driving to work when she noticed the flag pole, braked and skidded, her uncle Sivan said.

Only months ago, another young woman, 23-year-old Subhashree, was killed in Chennai when she was thrown off her scooter by a falling illegal hoarding, and then hit by a water tanker. The hoarding was reportedly erected for the wedding of an AIADMK functionary’s son.

In the Coimbatore incident, Rajeshwari suffered serious injuries to both legs, including a heavy fracture.

DRIVER ARRESTED

An FIR says two motorcycles, including the woman’s, were hit by the truck, and than another commuter suffered injuries.

It says the truck had been driven in a “rash and negligent” manner, but makes no mention of the flagpoles.

The truck driver has been arrested.

Rajeshwari’s family claim the police are trying to cover up the incident.

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said he didn’t have any information about the incident, but added that as far as he knew, there had been no order against erecting flags.

STALIN TEARS INTO GOVT

DMK President MK Stalin brought up the cover-up allegation in a tweet, and said another young woman had fallen victim to the AIADMK’s “obsession with publicity”.

Stalin is the leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu assembly.

Singanallur DMK MLA Karthik visited Rajeshwari in hospital.

Narayan Thirupathi of the BJP said flag poles and banners were wrong and that the authorities should take action, but also that the AIADMK alone wasn’t responsible. He said all political parties should follow norms.

The AIADMK is part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.
