Guwahati, 15 July 2025: The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati has introduced a new M.Tech degree program in Flood and Water Resources Management, aimed at working professionals and graduates seeking advanced training in managing flood-related challenges and sustainable water resource systems. Offered by the Department of Civil Engineering, the program will be delivered in hybrid mode—online classes complemented by on-campus lab sessions and final examinations.

The program does not require a GATE score for admission. Instead, applicants will be selected based on a written test or interview conducted by the department. Applications for the first batch are open, with the deadline set for 31 July 2025, and classes scheduled to begin on 18 August 2025.

Designed to accommodate the professional schedules of its students, the program offers multiple entry and exit points. Learners can earn:

A PG Certificate after completing 4 courses,

A PG Diploma after 7 courses,

A Master of Science (Engineering) after 10 courses and two semesters, and

A full M.Tech degree upon completing four semesters and a capstone project.

Applicants must hold a four-year Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Agricultural Engineering, or allied fields with at least 60% marks (or 6.0/10 CPI), and have a minimum of one year of professional experience in the water resource sector. There is no age limit for applicants.

The program focuses on equipping students with skills in hydrological modeling, GIS, remote sensing, and flood forecasting. It aims to prepare professionals for roles in government agencies, international organisations, consultancy firms, and research institutions engaged in climate and water resilience.

Highlighting the significance of the initiative, Prof. Hemant B. Kaushik, Dean of Online Education and Skilling at IIT Guwahati, said, “As climate risks grow and water resources come under increasing stress, this program is designed to empower professionals to meet emerging challenges with advanced knowledge and tools, while balancing their ongoing work commitments.”

In a strategic move to bolster the state’s flood resilience capabilities, the Water Resources Department of Assam has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIT Guwahati to train 20 of its engineers annually through the program. Supported by the World Bank and the Assam Flood and River Erosion Management Agency (FREMAA), the collaboration aims to upskill over 200 engineers in the next decade.

Founded in 1994, IIT Guwahati offers a broad spectrum of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs across 11 departments and several academic centres. It currently hosts over 8,600 students and 455 faculty members on its residential campus.

IIT Guwahati ranks 7th among engineering institutions and 9th in the overall category in the India Rankings 2024 by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). Internationally, it secured the 334th position in the QS World University Rankings 2026 and continues to maintain a strong presence in global rankings.
