Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday inaugurated a Rs 5-crore project to develop the Sootea police station in Biswanath district as a heritage tourist destination.

The Sootea police station is historically significant as the first government building in India where the national tricolour was hoisted during the Quit India Movement in 1942. While the nationwide call to raise the flag on police stations was set for September 20, local freedom fighters in Sootea raised it a month earlier, on August 20.

“The incident was not just symbolic, but a turning point showcasing the courage of smaller towns in India’s freedom struggle,” Sarma said while laying the foundation stone.

The project aims to preserve the site as a tribute to the historic event and provide visitors an opportunity to connect with Assam’s role in India’s independence movement.
