Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh left for New Delhi on January 16, triggering renewed speculation over possible steps to restore a popular government in the state as President’s Rule is set to expire next month.

Speaking briefly to mediapersons before his departure, Singh said that the central government would take action “very soon,” without elaborating on the purpose of his visit.

President’s Rule in Manipur is scheduled to end in February, and political circles are abuzz with expectations that a popular government may be reinstated without extending central rule.

The latest developments follow a meeting held last month in New Delhi, during which central BJP leaders had summoned all party MLAs from Manipur, cutting across community lines. Almost all BJP legislators from the state attended the meeting, further fuelling speculation about the formation of a new government.

Although no official announcement has been made so far, Singh’s visit to the national capital has added fresh momentum to discussions on Manipur’s political future and the possible roadmap ahead.
