Agartala, August 20, 2025: Tripura police have arrested a man suspected of involvement in international women trafficking. The accused identified as Amal Debnath, a resident of Santirbazar subdivision was taken into custody on Tuesday night following a complaint lodged by the family of a missing housewife from Udaipur.

It is reported that the housewife went missing after leaving home on the pretext of visiting a bank in Chandrapur, Udaipur. When she did not return, her family began searching for her. Her husband, Bidhan Debnath, later received a call claiming that she had been detained by a group of youths in Teliamura, who demanded money for her release.

The matter was reported to the Udaipur Women’s Police Station, which launched an investigation. Police sources revealed that the call demanding ransom was traced back to Amal Debnath. Investigators suspect that he trafficked the woman to other states in exchange for money. Evidence, including audio recordings of conversations between Bidhan Debnath and the accused, was also obtained.

Following this, Santirbazar police arrested Amal Debnath and later handed him over to Udaipur Women’s Police Station for further interrogation. Police also noted that multiple allegations of women trafficking have previously surfaced against the accused.

It is alleged that the missing housewife left home with 13 gold ornaments and ₹25,000 in cash. Meanwhile, her husband expressed deep anguish, saying their young daughter has been crying incessantly for her mother’s return.

Police are continuing their investigation to determine the woman’s whereabouts and to uncover possible links to wider trafficking networks.
