The Manipur Government has banned two brands of cough syrup found to contain the highly toxic chemical diethylene glycol, a substance known to cause acute poisoning, kidney failure, and even death.

In an official statement, the Drugs Control Administration under the Directorate of Health Services issued a public alert warning consumers, retailers, and healthcare providers against the purchase and use of the adulterated syrups — Relife and Resipfresh TR — both manufactured in Gujarat.

The decision follows reports from the Madhya Pradesh Government Drug Testing Laboratory confirming the presence of diethylene glycol in the two products.

The Drugs Control Department has prohibited the sale and consumption of the syrups across Manipur and directed all retailers, distributors, and pharmacies to immediately withdraw the affected batches from their shelves and report compliance.

Authorities have intensified surveillance in medical shops and hospitals to prevent further distribution, while healthcare providers have been advised to remain vigilant for symptoms of diethylene glycol poisoning among patients who may have consumed the products.
