Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President K. Meghachandra Singh today strongly condemned the demolition of the historic Manipur Rajbari located at Redlands, Laitumkhrah, Shillong — a site of great historical and emotional significance for the people of Manipur. The Rajbari once served as the residence of Maharaja Bodhachandra Singh during the signing of the Manipur Merger Agreement with the Dominion of India in September 1949.

Addressing media persons at Congress Bhawan, Imphal, Meghachandra described the demolition as an “unforgivable act of negligence and disrespect” under the so-called “Double Engine Government” at both the Centre and the State. He demanded that the Governments of India and Meghalaya immediately clarify the circumstances surrounding the demolition and take urgent steps to restore and preserve the site as a protected heritage monument.

The MPCC President held the BJP and its allies, including the National People’s Party (NPP), accountable for the incident, questioning the NPP’s silence despite leading the government in Meghalaya. He termed the act as an insult to the sentiments of Manipuris worldwide and criticised the NPP for “preaching regional pride while remaining mute spectators when Manipur’s heritage is attacked.”

Reacting to recent remarks made by NPP President and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Meghachandra clarified that the Congress Party in Manipur is guided not by political opportunism but by principles, accountability, and the interests of the people. He asserted that the ongoing political crisis and social unrest in Manipur are direct results of the BJP-led “Double Engine Government’s” divisive and insensitive governance — which the NPP continues to support.

Reaffirming the Congress Party’s commitment to justice, peace, and the protection of Manipur’s cultural identity, Meghachandra appealed to all democratic forces and civil society organisations to unite in safeguarding the state’s historical legacy and holding the ruling alliance accountable for its repeated failures.
