The Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, in collaboration with the Mines and Geology Department of Sikkim, has successfully concluded a comprehensive scientific assessment of high-risk glacial lakes in Gyalshing district.

The expedition, conducted from June 19 to July 1, 2025, focused on Tikip Lake, Bhaley Pokhari, and Doodh Pokhari—glacial lakes located in remote and environmentally sensitive areas. A team of eight experts carried out Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) surveys to evaluate the structural stability of the moraine dams that impound these lakes.

In addition to the surveys, the team repaired hydrometeorological sensors near the East Rathong Glacier and conducted lake discharge measurements at Bhaley Pokhari. These measures are intended to aid ongoing climate monitoring and mitigate the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).

Officials noted that the assessment represents a critical step toward enhancing disaster preparedness and strengthening glacial lake risk management in the Indian Himalayan Region.
