Sikkim Legislative Assembly Speaker K N Rai and Minister for Health Care, Human Services and Family Welfare Arjun Kumar Ghatani were honoured with the prestigious Param Vashistha Parayavaran Mitra Award in an special award function held in Mumbai on Saturday.

Environmental Medical Association presented the award on the occasion of 23rd National Conference on Environment and Respiratory Diseases.

Sikkim was awarded for the first time in the history of Environmental Medical Association in recognition to the exceptional pioneering work carried out by Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling in transforming the state in diversified fields. His leadership, guidance, support and encouragement that has led Sikkim to emerge as a model state in India in Cleanliness, Pollution free environment, traffic management, tourism development, hospitality were exclusively highlighted during the function. Both the Speaker and Minister dedicated the award to the Chief Minister for his unparallel contributions towards the historic transformation of the state. They expressed their sincere gratitude to the Organizing Committee for bestowing such a prestigious award to the state of Sikkim.

Spiritual leader from Brahamakumari, Yoginiben Dadi who was the Chief guest of the occasion handed over the award wherein she spoke on the importance of spiritual power to attain the ultimate contentment in life. She also appreciated the pilgrimage development and exceptional beauty of Sikkim.

Addressing the gathering, Speaker K N Rai underlined the activities taken up by the state of Sikkim for the protection and conservation of forest. He shared the concept of Smriti Van and also encouraged everyone to carry out plantation in dedication to special personalities

Health minister Ghatani highlighted several achievements made by the state under the visionary leadership of CM Pawan Chamling. He elaborated various path breaking initiatives conceptualized by the Chief Minister to embrace range of historic achievements including First Organic State in India in 2016, Nirmal Rajya Purashkar in 2008, Cleanest Hill Station Safaigiri Award in 2015, Ban imposition on smoking in public places, pan masala /gutkas, throwing of non-degradable garbage in Public drains and sewerage in 1997, bursting of crackers, use of plastic and Sikkim being a Litter Free State.

Speaking on the environmental protection in the state, he underlined notable initiatives like Sikkim Green Mission, Paryavaran Mahotsava, Ten Minutes to Earth and Smriti Van concept that ultimately enhanced the forest cover of the state from 43.95% in 1993 to 47.34% in 2013.

The Minister also talked about declaration of Kanchenjunga National Park located in West Sikkim as world heritage site by UNESCO, selection of Sikkim amongst the best place to visit in the world by the New York Times and the Lonely planet.
