Sikkim Chief minister Pawan Chamling and Smt Tika Maya Chamling have extended warm greetings and best wishes to the people of Sikkim and especially the Gurung Community on the auspicious occasion of Tamu Lochar.
Tamu Lochar is one of the most important festivals of the Gurung community. Tamu is another name of Gurung community and Losarmeans New Year. Tamu Losar is celebration of Gurung New Year. TheTamu Losar marks the beginning of the Tamu Sambat or Gurung calendar year.
Tamu Losar is celebrated on every 15th day of Poush ofthe Nepali calendar, which normally falls in December/January.
Lochar is the time when family members of all generations get together and exchange love and greetings. Gurungs, who call themselves ‘Tamu’ are very rich in tradition and culture. They come together to celebrate Tamu Losar and rejoice in various cultural processions, feasting and greetings. Celebrations take place wherein rallies in traditional attires and cultural programmes are organized.
In his message, Chamling has expressed, “Such festivals carry great significance in shaping the socio-cultural fabric of the Sikkimese society and has urged all to observe each festival with utmost mutual respect and reverence.”
