Manipur Police foiled the attempt of Congress party to organise a ‘peaceful’ rally using tear gas at Congress Bhawan, Imphal on Thursday.

The foiled rally was to commemorate the Quit India movement day observed throughout the country marking the nation’s historic movement against the British Empire. Former chief minister of Manipur, OkramIbobi Singh, who was present at the Bhawan when the incident took place, described the state BJP government as ‘anti-national.’

Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president TN Haokip, CWC member Gaikhangam, Congress MLAs, senior party workers etc were also present.

The incident happened when leaders of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee along with the Manipur Pradesh youth Committee who were planning to march towards Mahatma Gandhi Avenue, Thangal bazaar, to pay floral tributes, to father of the Nation.

The rally was stopped by a team of Manipur police at the gate Bhawan’s for not having permission to organise a rally.

After a prolonged confrontation between the two parties, Manipur police used tear gas and disperse the crowd. However, there was no report of any casualty during the police action.

Speaking to media person at the premises of Congress Bhavan, OkramIbobi Singh claimed that as a law-abiding citizen, the Congress party had sought permission from the state government 4 days back fort to organise a peaceful rally. But, the government failed to give any response, he said.

Noting that the day is observed throughout the country, he claimed that the manner in which the BJP government treated the Congress party on Thursday is like an act of “killing the democracy.”

“It is anti-national as well as uncivilized manner. The motive of the BJP government to suppress the Congress party using its might will gain no ground. Suppressing the voice of the people is next to impossible,” he added.

Claiming that during the fifteen years government of the Congress party, all peaceful rally and democratic demonstration were allowed excluding the hypersensitive areas near the governor campus and the civil secretariat areas, he clarified.

However, the district administration has contended that the proposed rally planned by the Congress party falls under silent zone and as a result permission was not granted.

Prior to the confrontation with the police, the Congress party began the observance with a flag hoisting ceremony, floral tributes to the statue of late Mahatma Gandhi inside the premise of Congress Bhawan.
