Former chief engineer Sunil Bhowmik who was in five days police remand on district court’s order passed on last Saturday fell seriously sick yesterday and was admitted first to IGM hospital and then was referred to ICU of GBP hospital, considering his serious condition. Sunil who is in custody in connection with a charge of civil nature in the alleged PWD scam has long been a patient of high blood pressure and abnormally high sugar.

According to allegations made by his wife Kalyani Bhowmik, Sunil had to spend time in police remand in extremely uncomfortable condition , being forced to stay without appropriate medicine including insulin and medication for high pressure. ‘Even his food , as prescribed by doctors, was not served properly and he had to sleep on a worn-out mat on floor in a dirty room infested with mosquitoes and bedbugs ; naturally he did not have sleep even; ironically the court order had mandated the police to keep him under regular medical check-up and take care of his health’ said Kalyani ruefully. She also dismissed as ‘absolutely baseless’ the charge that her husband had tried to flee from police custody. Sunil Bhowmik is now under life-support in the GBP hospital’s ICU.

Meanwhile , bail petition has already been moved in the district court and session court by Sunil’s lawyer Pranabasish Bhowmik informing today’s presiding judge Gobinda Das of his client’s critical condition in ICU and inability even to speak . A plea has been made for his bail so that he can be taken outside the state for better treatment. The bail petition will come up for hearing soon on Monday.
