The National Commission of India for Safai Karamcharis, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, led by Chairman Manhar Valjibhai Zala on Monday assured to look into the request of Safai Karamcharis for increase in their wages as they find it difficult to meet their basic needs on their present wage of Rs 6000.

Addressing a press conference at Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) Conference Hall in Kohima, the Chairman expressed his happiness that there were no deaths related to manual scavenging in Nagaland.

He said a District Vigilance Monitoring Committee as per the Manual Scavenging Act, 2013 should be set up.

The Commission has directed the authorities to provide minimum wages, leave benefit, safety equipment, housing facilities, medical facilities, etc to all the 68 Safai Karamcharis and 126 temporary workers under KMC.

The Commission said that all Safai Karamcharis should get a health card under Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and directed the authorities to provide facilities for separate changing rooms for ladies and gents, bathroom with water facilities etc.

The Commission also said that it is the fundamental right of Safai Karamcharis to get promotion according to seniority.

It informed that an awareness camp with medical health checkup for all Safai Karamcharis and their family members will be held on February 18 at KMC office.
