Sanghamitra Kalita to Join CNN as Vice-President

Making Northeast India, especially Assam proud yet again Sanghamitra Kalita, former Managing Editor of the Los Angeles Times is set to join CNN as vice-president of digital programming soon.

39 years old Sanghamitra an Assamese origin has headed Los Angeles Times since 2015. She was among the team to have received the Pulitzer Prize which is considered nominal for outstanding work in journalism. With this win, the Los Angeles Times has now become the most frequent winner in the Breaking News Coverage category and also marks their 44th Pulitzer.

Born in Brooklyn to parents Nirmala and Mahesh Kalita, she was raised in Long Island, Puerto Rico and New Jersey. After majoring in history from Rutgers University, she received her master’s degree from Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. Prior to her current occupation, Sanghamitra was the Executive Editor of the Quartz and was instrumental in launching Quartz in Africa and India. She was also part of the LA Times team which won in the Breaking News Reporting category for their coverage of the San Bernardino shooting that occurred on December 2, 2015 and the terror investigation that followed.

Although her relation to India is minimal, she is one of the founding editors for Mint, one of India’s largest business newspapers at present. Apart from her other endeavors, she also served as President of South Asian Journalists Association and has found a place in Folio’s Top 100 Women in Media.
