JNU student Sharjeel Imam, who has been booked under sedition charges for his alleged comments at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and other places last month, was brought to Guwahati on Thursday for interrogation.

Imam was taken to Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH) in the capital city of Assam for a health check-up. He was later produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Kamrup (M).

According to local reports, the crime branch had sought 14 days’ custody but the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate granted only four. Shantanu Bhattacharya, public prosecutor, said that Sections 121 A, 124 A, 153 A, B, read with Section 13 (1) of IPC and 15 A (iii), 18 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act was registered at the Crime Branch Police Station here.

Imam came to limelight during the protests at Shaheen Bagh against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), and was arrested from Bihar’s Jehanabad on 28 January in a case of allegedly making inflammatory speeches and raised slogans like ‘cut-off-Assam’ from the country.
Imam was slapped with a sedition case after his alleged speeches went viral on social media.
