Sikkim Govt Constructing PMGSY Roads to Complete Rural Connectivity by 2019

The Rural Management & Development Department is constructing the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) roads in Sikkim with all seriousness to complete the rural connectivity with good quality motor able roads within the targeted time of 2019. To carry forward the goal of the state government to connect all rural habitations with quality roads, the department is all set to achieve the target and carry on the quality works in the rural road sector.

Out of the total rural habitations of 366 with population greater than 250, the road construction work in 341 habitations are either completed or at different stages of construction. The project proposals for the connectivity of balance 25 habitations are cleared by the state government and are under the active consideration of the Ministry of Rural Development for sanction.

Two Rural Connectivity Roads constructed under PMGSY were inaugurated by PD Rai, Lok Sabha MP on Friday and Saturday in the East District. In both the occasions, the area MLA, Bek Bahadur Rai was present along with the engineers of RM&DD headed by the Secretary, D R Nepal. A large number of the beneficiaries, the Gram & Zilla Panchayat members also attended the function. A detailed discussion was held with the beneficiaries regarding the upkeep of the road.

PD Rai expressed satisfaction with the quality of roads constructed and advised the people to take maximum benefits from the opportunities that will be available after the connectivity is provided to the area. Bek Bahadur Rai emphasized on the participation of the rural people in upkeep of the road and beautifying the surrounding by planting good quality flowering trees. Secretary, D R Nepal advised the people to cooperate with the department in implementing various rural schemes as the state government is taking up many schemes for raising the living standards of the rural population. He said that the department will leave no stone unturned to achieve the vision of the state government by implementing these schemes with utmost sincerity and with the satisfaction of the rural population.

The beneficiaries of the roads expressed satisfaction for completing the good quality roads and they thanked Chief Minister of the state for providing road connectivity in their area. They were happy with the construction of the road as it helps in overall economic development of the village.

The two roads inaugurated on Friday and Saturday are:

Rural connectivity road from Lower Sumin to Upper Sumin: This road connecting the remote Upper Sumin habitation was inaugurated on Friday. The road was sanctioned in two stages for formation cutting and black topping. The first stage was sanctioned for Rs. 411.98 lakhs during 2008-09 for a length of 10.01 km and was completed during January 2014. The second stage was sanctioned for Rs. 716.54 lakhs during 2014-15 and is completed on March 2017. The road benefits more than 300 rural households.

Rural connectivity road from PassithangGaucharan to Nopgaon: This road connects the remote Nopgaon habitation and was inaugurated on Saturday. Here also the road was sanctioned in two stages for formation cutting and black topping. The first stage was sanctioned for Rs. 255.44 lakhs during 2007-08 for a length of 6.50 km and was completed during June 2011. The second stage was sanctioned for Rs. 353.16 lakhs during 2011-12 and is completed now. The road benefits more than 70 rural households.
