The 123rd raising day of Sikkim Police was celebrated on the Sikkim Armed Police ground at Pangthang in East Sikkim on Wednesday. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, who was the chief guest, received the salute and inspected the parade. Tamang was accorded a warm welcome by Sikkim DGP, A Shankar Rao.

In his address, Tamang congratulated the Sikkim Police on completion of 122 years of its establishment.
Tamang made a slew of announcements for the uplift of the police force like regularisation of home guards after completing eight years of service, enhancement of the rations allowance of police officers and staff to Rs 2,900 per month from Rs 1,300, out-of-turn promotion for outstanding service in difficult situations or during emergencies, upgrade of police outposts and residential quarters, etc.

The first Sikkim Police outpost was set up on November 27, 1897 at Aritar village in Rhenock on the eastern border of the State with one havildar and four constables. Today, Sikkim Police has a strength of over 6,000 personnel serving in different branches.
