Six tourists – two from Odisha and four from West Bengal – belonging to two families died when their vehicle slid down from a hillock at Phengla close to Tashi View Point, about five kilometres from the Sikkimese capital Gangtok.

The accident at around 10 p.m. on Tuesday evening left two other tourists and the driver seriously injured and fighting for their lives in a Gangtok hospital, said East Sikkim Police Superintendent D.B. Giri. The victims included two children and two women.

“Five of the tourists died on the spot. One died onway to the hospital. Two tourists and the vehicle driver are seriously injured and admitted in a private hospital in Gangtok,” said Giri.

Four of the deceased were from Ichhapore of West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, though they originally hailed from Odisha. The two others – a six year old girl and her mother – were residents of Odisha, said the police officer.
