Students of five constituent colleges of Dhanamanjuri (DM) University staged a joint protest in front of DM College of Arts in Imphal joining the chorus demanding basic requirements of being a university.

The protest of the students came up barely a day after functioning of the university was paralyzed after All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) imposed a shutdown to all activities of the university until the basic requirements at the institution are provided.

On June 25, students of the five colleges – DM College of Science, DM College of Commerce, DM College of Arts, GP Women College and LMS Law College – converged at the gate of DM College of Arts where the administrative block of the cluster university located and staged the protest. The protesting students displayed various placards demanding a full-fledged DM University.

Talking to reporters at the protest site, Human Resource Development secretary of AMSU, Bruce Pebam reiterated the demands of the students and said that since the very inception, the university is running without basic requirements of being a university. He also said that they were raising the demands for the welfare of the varsity as well as for the students.

He then alleged that since the inception stage the varsity was functioning without regular vice-chancellor, registrar. “There is no regular teaching staff and non-teaching staff, no syndicate member”, he added. “The syllabus of the university is not approved till now even after the end an academic year”, he also alleged.

The AMSU leader said that the student body and students of the colleges affiliated to the varsity had not launched the strike all of a sudden but after the government and concerned authorities failed to address their demands despite repeated requests. “The teachers teaching the graduate classes are also taking the classes of postgraduate”, he further alleged.

Bruce Pebam then blamed the state government and the Education Department for the prevailing crisis in the DM University, while alleging that they had not heeded to the demands of the students for timely action to address the grievances of the students.

He then questioned whether the university was set up only to do contractual works and not for the welfare of the students. He then warned that the students will intensify their agitation if the government fails to give a time bound period to address the demands.

Mention may be made that, all the activities of DM University remained paralyzed since Monday with the commencement of the total shutdown of the varsity announced by the AMSU.

DM University was established under the Dhanamanjuri University Act, 2017 which came into force on April 6, 2018, through a notification in Manipur gazette published by the Department of Higher and Technical education Manipur.

Five premier government colleges – DM College of Science, DM College of Commerce, DM College of Arts, GP Women College and LMS Law College – are the constituents of the cluster university set up under RAMSA scheme.
