The IIM Calcutta Innovation Park organized a one-day T-SEC “Thinking Social” seminar at Assam Startup – The Nest, Guwahati on March 8, 2019.

The primary objective of this exercise was to build awareness, interest, and desire to engage with the Social Enterprise Ecosystem among the aspiring entrepreneurs and startups who are about to embark on their entrepreneurship journeys soon. The seminar aimed to introduce the budding entrepreneurs to the concept of social entrepreneurship in the rapidly evolving global economy.

Pranjal Konwar, COO, IIM Calcutta Innovation Park, rolled out an introduction to the event and briefed about the objective of the seminar to encourage and inspire social entrepreneurship in the region. He also spoke about the Assam Startup – The Nest that has been established as an avant-garde state-owned marquee incubator under the Assam Startup Policy.

Four social entrepreneurs working towards different causes plaguing the country shared their stories with the participants.

The social entrepreneurs who addressed the seminar are:

Hironmoy Gogoi, Founder & Creative Head, GKK India (Gaon Ka Khana), and Proprietor, Blackhorse Marketing.

Anupam Nath, Co-Founder, Getkraft Dot Com, and Xcraft Online Pvt. Ltd.

Abhinav Girdhar, Co-Founder, Bodhi Health Education, and Executive Board Member, VisionSpring India.

Prantik Sinha, Founder, Agastya Buoyant.

 

They acquainted the participants with the various social problems as well as the different innovative enterprising solutions to those problems in the local community.

Hironmoy Gogoi, the youngest author to pen a book on entrepreneurship, “The Future CEO”, and the man who has committed himself to the promotion of the local and organic food, gave out some golden mantras to grow into a successful entrepreneur.

Anupam Nath spoke, at length, about the reasons for starting his venture Getkraft Dot Com that has generated employment for over 500 rural artisans (mostly women) and the hurdles that he had to face along with his partner Rahul Baruah for drawing investment and popularizing it.

Prantik Sinha made an interesting presentation on the threats of water body pollution and his startup’s innovative products that try to alleviate the magnitude of contamination. His Trash Boom and Underwater Lift Bag are particularly worth mentioning.

Abhinav Girdhar, on the other hand, pressed on the need for training health workers in the rural areas. He also spoke about his various e-learning programs for healthcare professionals under his venture Bodhi Health Education (www.bodhihealthedu.org).

 

One highlight of the seminar was a lively interactive session on Social Entrepreneurship conducted by Dr. Subhrangshu Sanyal, CEO, IIM Calcutta Innovation Park.

 

The “Thinking Social” seminar was also graced by Alok Kumar, IAS, Chief Secretary, Government of Assam. He was joined by Ravi Capoor, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Assam, Industries & Commerce Department; Rajib Bora, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Assam, Finance Department; Puru Gupta, IAS, Secretary, Government of Assam, Industries & Commerce Department, and Commissioner, Industries and Commerce, Government of Assam; and Manjula Saikia Bhuyan, IAS, Additional Secretary, Government of Assam, Industries and Commerce Department, and the Managing Director, AIIDC.

They encouraged the budding entrepreneurs of the state to take advantage of the various benefits and incentives laid out under the Assam Startup Policy 2017.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Secretary, Alok Kumar, encouraged the aspiring entrepreneurs to make the most of the opportunities created by the Assam Startup and give flight to their imagination and aspirations. He expressed the deep commitment of the Government of Assam towards providing every kind of support to the innovative entrepreneurs in the state.

 

As a part of the seminar, a workshop was also conducted post lunch on the topic, “What do Investors look for?” The budding entrepreneurs present at the workshop received valuable insights from the resource persons that included Subir Singha, Business Development Manager, ICCO Group; Ribhu Ranjan Baruah, Manager-Investment, NEDFI Venture Capital; and Debajit Sen, Deputy Vice President, New Economy Group, Axis Bank.
