Three-day Torgya, is an exclusive annual Buddhist calendar monastic dance festival with rituals, began in famous Tawang Monastery courtyard here before day break on Thursday.

Monks donning masks of pig performed Phachham to mark the beginning followed by burning ritual cake zshor or Torgya while monastic dances continued in evening watched by huge gathering of devotees from villages, town and from Bhutan.

The monastery Abbot and monks before burning the cake performed rituals while chanting hymns. This annual Monpa celebration, has been observed since inception of this Monastery to ward off any kind of external aggression and protect people from natural disasters.

Grains collected by monks from different villages were used for rituals in early days. The abbot on 2nd day will bless devotees with long life initiation and the monks will perform monastic dances whole day depicting various stories of Buddhist siddhas and Tawang history on last day.
