A speeding train on Friday mowed down a wild elephant while it was trying to cross a railway track in north Lakhimpur district of Assam.

Sources said that a herd of elephants from the nearby Dulung reserve forest was crossing the railway track at Pathalipam area, when the Murkongselek (Jonai)-Dekargoan passenger train hit the jumbo, killing it on the spot. Veterinarians were rushed to the accident site for carrying out post-mortem.

Dolung reserve forest has 70 elephants.
