In a recent video doing rounds on social media which showed pythons being beheaded, skinned and cut into pieces publicly in Tripura has garnered a lot of criticism. The Tripura police have arrested three tribal men for slaughtering six pythons at Kathalbari village in Kanchanpur subdivision of North Tripura district.

According to reports, Northern Tripura’s Kanchanpur Sub-Divisional Police Officer Bikramjit Sukladas said that they arrested the three men – Asi Chandra Reang, 60, Rakanjoy Reang, 45 and Purbachay Reang, 45 – on Wednesday and produced them in a local court on Thursday. The tribal men were arrested after the forest department filed an FIR in accordance with the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. According to North Tripura District Forest Officer (DFO) Naresh Babu, the pythons were found by the tribal men while they were engaged in “Jhum” farming in the mountainous areas. The men sold them in the local markets where the local people consume the meat.

Denouncing the incident several NGOs and wildlife activists have protested the killing of the endangered species.
