The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved India’s agreement with Bangladesh on withdrawal of water from Bangladesh’ Feni River for supplying drinking water to the Sabroom town in Tripura under South District of the state as the town has an inadequate water supply. As per the agreement signed to supply drinking water, Tripura will be withdrawing 1.82 cusecs of water from the Feni River.

The groundwater in the Sabroom town in Tripura contains a high-level of iron. Hence, the implementation of the scheme will benefit around 7000 people population of Sabroom town.

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has given ex-post facto approval for the MoU between India and Bangladesh on this withdrawal. As on date, there is no water-sharing agreement on Feni River between India and Bangladesh.

On October 7 this year, the Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with India to allow the release of potable water, Bangladesh has agreed to let India withdraw 1.82 cusecs of water from Feni River for drinking purposes of the residents of the border town.

On October 5 this year, the Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with India to allow the release of potable water ending the negotiations that were dragging since the early 90s.

Feni River originates in South Tripura district and flows through Sabroom town and then enters Bangladesh.
