Police have arrested two members of an NGO over their involvement in arson cases in the Meghalaya capital.

The two have been identified as Banhanlang Marboh and Henry Kharjahrin – both members of Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC).

Henry is the cousin of Robert Kharjarin, chairman of Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organization (CoMSO) and president of the HYC. CoMSO is a group of NGOs fighting for the implementation of the Inner Line Permit system in the state.

According to police, the duo was identified based on eyewitness accounts and CCTV footage. In the first case, a Gypsy was set ablaze at Shyiap and later, a Bolero pick-up vehicle was set ablaze at Laitlum, Mawlai on February 12.

Police said both the HYC members confessed to their involvement in the crime.
