United States President Donald Trump on Tuesday termed Prime Minister Narendra Modi “Father of India”. The two leaders, who met at the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, heaped praises on each other during the press briefing.

This was their second meeting in three days. The two leaders had earlier addressed a crowd of 50,000 Indian-Americans at NRG Stadium in Houston on Sunday.

While PM Thanked US president for his presence at the Howdy, Modi event and termed him a good friend of India, Trump said Modi was like the father of India.

“I remember India before [before PM Modi rule], not intimately, but I remember India before, it was very torn, it was a lot fighting and he brought it all together. Like a father would bring it together. Maybe he is the father of India. We will call him the father of India. He brought things together, you don’t hear that anymore,” Donald Trump told a room full of journalists and bureaucrats from the two countries.

On being asked about the relevance and impact of his presence during the Howdy, Modi event in Houston on Indo-US ties and his personal chemistry with PM Modi, the US President said that his relationship with the PM is as good as it can get.

“I have great respect, I have great admiration and I really like him. He is a great gentleman and a great leader,” Trump said. “I think what the event showed that how much I like India and how much I like your prime minister.”

The US president compared the prime minister with rockstar Elvis Presley.

Talking about the crowd response in the Howdy, Modi event, Trump said, “There was a tremendous sprit in that room…those people loved this gentleman [PM Modi]… they went crazy. He is like an American version of Elvis.”

On being asked ‘how do you see the statement coming from Pakistani PM admitting that the Pakistani ISI trained Al Qaeda?’, Donald Trump said, “..The Prime Minister (PM Modi) will take care of it.”

“I think Prime Minister Modi gave a message to Pakistan loud and clear the other day [Sunday]. I am sure he will be able to handle that situation,” Trump said.

However, the US president also reiterated that he hopes India and Pakistan will resolve the Kashmir issue soon.

“I really believe that Prime Minister Modi and (Pakistan) Prime Minister (Imran) Khan will get along when they get to know each other, I think a lot of good things will come from that meeting,” he added.

India has been steadfast on its stand that Kashmir is an internal issue and the dispute with Pakistan a bilateral one. India has in the past categorically rejected intervention by any third party in the matter.

Despite the speculation that India and US may announce a trade deal soon after Tuesday’s bilateral, no announcement was made at the press conference. however, the US president assured that a trade deal will soon be finalised.
