Yumthang valley of North Sikkim is one place on earth that you do not want to miss visiting in your lifetime. This heaven on earth is also known as the Sikkim Valley of Flowers sanctuary. It is a sanctuary with river, hot springs, yaks and grazing pasture on rolling meadows surrounded by the Himalayan mountains in the North Sikkim district. It is at an elevation of 3,564 meters above sea level at a distance of 150 kilometers from the state capital Gangtok.

Why is it called the valley of flowers?

The valley is a home to the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, which has over twenty-four species of the rhododendron, the state flower of Sikkim. The flowering season is from late February and to mid June, when countless flowers bloom and covers the entire valley in multicolored hues. Mother Nature has bestowed the valley with surreal beauty at its purest form.

The surrounding: A tributary of the river Teesta flows past the valley and the town of Lachung, the nearest inhabited centre. There is also a hot spring in the valley.

Fact check: Yumthang is closed between December and March due to heavy snowfall. A forest rest house is the only permanent residence in the valley. During the spring months, the area blooms with rhododendrons, primulas, poppies, iris and other flora. Skiing is also conducted in the valley. A trip to the Valley takes around two hours from Lachung, which is about 125 km from Gangtok.

Last words: The valley has always been a major tourist attraction spot. However, in view of increasing number of tourists, there is a possibility of environmental degradation in near future. Which implies that the government needs to pay more attention towards its conservation and people coming from all over the world should also be responsible of taking care of such a beautiful place while visiting.
