The Meghalaya Government set to file its response over the alleged vehicle scam before the High Court within this week.
According to a senior official of the Law Department, some miscommunication led to a delay in filing the reply.
“Initiating departmental proceedings against any officer without the production of charges, materials, and witnesses cannot be initiated,” he said.
It is worth noting that the Meghalaya High Court has issued a rule of contempt against the Secretary of the Home department for “deliberately disregarding” its order and “trying to obfuscate the issue and stand as an impediment to a fact-finding exercise in the matter of defalcation of public funds”.
“Let a suo motu rule of contempt be issued against the Secretary in the Home Department of the State for deliberately disregarding a Court order, trying to obfuscate the issue and stand as an impediment to a fact-finding exercise in the matter of defalcation of public funds. The rule is made returnable on November 2, 2022,” the court said.
The order directed the state government to file a report through the Home Department Secretary, indicating the effective measures taken against the offenders involved in the racket to remove or dissipate their assets or funds.
