Cyclone Sitrang: Meghalaya On High Alert With Schools Ordered Shut In 4 Districts; Inauguration Of Siju Block Cancelled

The much-anticipated inauguration of the Siju Block in South Garo Hills by Meghalaya Chief Minister – Conrad Sangma on October 25 has been canceled, due to Cyclone Sitrang.

The cyclonic storm has been impacting Garo Hills since Monday afternoon, and the intensity of the winds has caused power outages in Ampati, Tura, Dalu, and even Baghmara. It has caused extensive damage to numerous locations, uprooting trees and snapping electrical wires.

Meanwhile, the disaster management teams remain on high alert while field teams of the (Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited) MeECL power distribution are restoring power lines.

The state administration instructed the concerned authorities to shut educational institutions on Tuesday across four districts of Meghalaya bordering Bangladesh. These districts are East and West Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, and South West Khasi Hills.

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast, Meghalaya to witness a “generally cloudy sky with continuous rain” on Tuesday.

It is worth noting that under the influence of Cyclone Sitrang, the IMD has issued a red alert for four North Eastern states of India – Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura.
